International Scientific Conference / Annual Meeting of the Dessau-Wörlitz Commission 2021

conference

In Conversation on Gardens: Interactions Between 18th and Early 19th Century Landscape gardens in Central and East-Central Europe

9–11 September 2021
Historic Inn: „Zum Eichenkranz”, Wörlitz

Concept and scientific direction:
PD Dr. Michael Niedermeier, Dr. Jana Kittelmann, Dr. Ingo Pfeifer, Dr. Andrea Thiele

The Dessau-Wörlitz Commission dedicates this year's annual conference, organised in cooperation with the Kulturstiftung Dessau-Wörlitz and the Pückler Gesellschaft für die Erforschung und Erhaltung historischer Gärten e.V., to the history of the landscape garden in its cross-border dimensions.

In addition to genuinely garden-artistic, landscape-aesthetic, and cultural questions, the conference also wants to take a look at the dynastic-political and genealogical motifs of landscape designs in Poland, Russia, or the Old Empire. The conference will discuss the garden-artistic dramatization of manorial gardens as memorial landscapes of an ancient ancestral origin of one's own noble family or the design of neo-Gothic or Classicist garden buildings and country estates as paternalistic-patriotic or national places of remembrance in their respective semantics. The international colloquium will create a dialogue of renowned art historians and scholars with garden monument conservators from various landscape gardens in Poland and Germany.

Various institutions in Germany and Poland collaborate in this project: the Dessau-Wörlitz Commission, the Kulturstiftung Dessau-Wörlitz, the Instytut Zachodni in Poznań, the Pückler Gesellschaft für die Erforschung und Erhaltung historischer Gärten e.V., the Stiftung Fürst Pückler Museum Park & Schloss Branitz, the Stiftung Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau and the Professorship for the History of Landscape Architecture and Garden Monument Preservation in Dresden.
