The Chodowiecki Prize aims to support and recognize extraordinary publications in the study of the Enlightenment. Named after the Berlin painter and engraver Daniel Chodowiecki, who illustrated books and prints in areas as varied as history, art, literature, music, natural science, pedagogy, philosophy, law and theater, the prize is awarded to studies that deepen our understanding of the Enlightenment in an enduring way. The awardees will be those that achieve this generally and compellingly, so as to present ideas of the Enlightenment to a wider public. Doctoral dissertations are eligible, as well as books by established Enlightenment scholars. The prize will be given every two years and is worth 5,000 €. The first award will take place in 2022.
The IZEA is housed within the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. As an institution of advanced study on the cultural and intellectual history of the 18th century, the IZEA contends with a period that laid the foundations of modern western society.
