Christian Thomasius: Selected Works

Project managers: Dr. Frank Grunert, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Schneiders (Münster)

Duration of project: since 1993

Project Description

The Ausgewählten Werke of Christian Thomasius have initially been edited by Prof. Dr. Dr. Werner Schneiders, h. c. (Münster). With the publication of the Monatsgespräche, Dr. Frank Grunert is now also an official editor, with, since 1993, a reprint edition whose individual volumes offer an introductory preface by the respective volume editors and are published by the Georg Olms Verlag. The publication also offers a thorough index of persons and subjects. In addition to the 24 volumes originally intended by Werner Schneiders, which essentially encompass the main philosophical works of the jurist and philosopher, eight further volumes are planned. They are dedicated to the history of science and to the scientifically reformist works of Thomasius and allow therefore a more accurate positioning of Thomasius' works in the debate over the contemporary scholarly culture. The expansion of edition should therefore provide insights into both the issues raised by the changing history of science and offer a new perception of Thomasius' work in the context of his time.
