Research project

Visualizing Time in the Eighteenth Century: Images and Tropes in Vico's Historiographical Method.

This project aims to demonstrate that Giambattista Vico offers a decisive eighteenth-century genealogy of the image-based transformations of historiography. Its central claim is that Vico’s theory of history rests on a single, internally bipartite turn toward images: visual images, which organize historical visibility, and linguistic images, which organize historical meaning. The broader ambition of the research is to rethink Vico as a theorist of historical representation. His work shows that history becomes intelligible only through images: icons that make the past visible, and tropes that make it narratable. In this sense, Vico provides one of the most powerful early models for a pictorial and rhetorical theory of history, in which images are not secondary illustrations of the past, but constitutive forms of historical knowledge itself.
