My research interests revolve around the production of textual translations as means of transmission of knowledge in the Enlightenment period. During my stay at IZEA, I address the case study of Johann Christoph Gottsched’s translations of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle’s Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes (1686). In particular, my focus lies on how Gottsched employed paratextual devices – such as prefaces and footnotes – to modify the contents and steer the interpretation of Fontenelle’s bestseller. Gottsched’s aim, I argue, was twofold. On the one hand, he sought to adapt Fontenelle’s cosmology based on Cartesian physics to the German context, dominated by the metaphysics of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Christian Wolff. On the other, Gottsched updated the scientific contents of his source text in the light of the latest astronomical discoveries of his times. As a result, in performing the role of cultural mediator and ideological gatekeeper Gottsched produced conflictual sites of knowledge, now conveying contrasting pieces of information.
